The English Section of the Language Centre at the University of Passau offers a range of courses for teacher education students combining professional English, international perspectives and practical approaches to multilingual education.
Language-supportive teaching in multilingual classrooms
Practical Language-Supportive Didactics for Multilingual Classrooms (Stud.IP 90599), developed by Senior English Language Lecturer Melissa Cain, focuses on practical strategies for linguistically diverse classrooms. Cain is a qualified US high school teacher with extensive teaching experience in different school contexts.
Students explore approaches including scaffolding, language-sensitive lesson planning, translanguaging, differentiation and language-aware assessment. These strategies can be applied across subjects to support learners with different linguistic backgrounds and make multilingualism a resource in the classroom.
International perspectives in teacher education
In Teaching in English (Stud.IP 90560), students develop their English for school and professional contexts.
International Conversations in Teacher Education (Stud.IP 90566) connects Passau students with future teachers from different countries through live online discussions on current educational topics. Participants develop their academic and professional English while gaining experience in international and intercultural communication. The course also provides useful exam preparation.
Global Classrooms: Educational Journeys (Stud.IP 90565) gives students first-hand insights into schools and education systems around the world. International students share experiences from their home countries while participants strengthen their English communication skills.
